Employer of Choice

By MiniMovers
Being an Employer of Choice is of paramount importance to the management team at MiniMovers. For Owner Mike O'Hagan, it simply means being a company where everyone who works there WANTS to come to work. It also means that their recruitment strategies encourage people who are looking for a workplace that will treat them right, give them flexible working hours, excellent award-winning training and a career path. As a result, both personal and professional growth is not only achievable but actively encouraged and this has always been the attitude at MiniMovers.

Whether it is the hot breakfast supplied free each morning to staff, help with achieving real world qualifications such as an Medium Rigid License or a Cert. III in Transport and Road Distribution, the encouragement for operators to move from trainee to accredited employee with unlimited support and encouragement in order to earn much higher remuneration, the awards for achievement every step of the way along the MiniMover's career path or their friendly caring attitude - all these things make MiniMovers an Employer of Choice.

In 1987, O’Hagan noticed that there was no known brand servicing the short distance removals market. Most people just loaded up the car over and over, drove back and forth watching the petrol gauge dropping steadily, and ignored their aching back. Capitalising on the opportunity, he set up in business as MiniMovers – with $200 and a ute – and concentrated on being an alternative to moving yourself.

The public loved it and over the past 22 years MiniMovers has expanded to a $25 million business covering Melbourne, SE Queensland and the Gold Coast with big and small trucks available seven days and nights a week for any size job.

Whilst the main goal at MiniMovers is to "create ecstatically happy customers" – a stunning 70% of their work comes from repeat or referred customers - it is probably the staff goal "to create a happy fun secure workplace" and the amount of time put into this goal which makes MiniMovers a great place to work.

It seems in today’s money orientated environment, companies base all the important decisions on money, customer satisfaction and profit, to the detriment of staff morale or satisfaction. It is refreshing to work for a company where staff issues are right up on the same level as customer satisfaction. Whilst many other leading edge companies are removing even the most basic facilities such as tea and coffee from their staff kitchens, MiniMovers just keeps leading the way in improving staff development and morale.

The first Melbourne depot opened in November 2004 and MiniMovers’ growth in Victoria is exceeding all expectations, currently operating a fleet of 30 trucks plus support vehicles from 5 depots. As each new depot opens, it is paramount that all the groundwork has been done to ensure the very unique workplace culture doesn't change. The training system incorporates many parts of this culture and once a month at the “Big Breakfast”, a different subject is introduced. Education is the way to stop any bad practises entering a company. Knowing what the MiniMover’s acceptable standards are is a good way of ensuring they stay high. This month’s subject was “Maintaining a happy and harassment free workplace” which in a nutshell is about working together, respect for each other and exceeding each other’s expectations.

MiniMovers strives to create a caring fun secure non-threatening workplace but it is something everyone needs to work on together. It isn't something that can be done without everybody pulling together to achieve the same goals.

Their innovative approach in the way they care for and train staff has earned them such awards as the Australian National Training Association Award for Excellence in Training in the Transport and Distribution Industry, and the Qantas Medium Employer of the Year.
